Skrivekuglen — An interactive museum exhibition

Interaction design, prototyping
Project Overview
The goal of this project was to create an interactive exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark that would evoke curiosity in its' visitors.

This project was originally initiated as part of my master thesis at the study Digital Design & Interactive Technologies at the IT University of Copenhagen.
My Contributions
The project was done in collaboration with my master thesis partner and Designmuseum Danmark. My partner and I did everyth in regards of exhibition design. Designmuseum Danmark contributed with knowledge, feedback and dissemination content for the exhibition.

Process

The ending of this process did somewhat abruptly end due to covid-19 and the restrictions in Denmark. However, I wish to present the process up until that day.

Initial meeting and desk research
After the initial meeting with Designmuseum Danmark it became clear that our visions for a digital presence in museums were aligned; make the digital invisible yet enhancing for the museum experience. We were then so lucky to be attached to one of their upcoming exhibitions as interaction designers; Skrivekuglen (the Writing Ball). With these things in mind, we searched the internet for both exhibition designs that would obtain our common goal as well as finding existing projects related to the Writing Ball.
Understand the values of Designmuseum Danmark

Future Workshop set up for brainstorming with Designmuseum Danmark

Voting for ideas and evaluating them

Mapping out the museum space

Sketching out ideas

Presenting design ideas for Designmuseum Danmark
At the meeting we presented three exhibition designs and discussed the pros and cons of each one. Employees at Designmuseum Danmark gave feedback and my partner and I sketched out different solutions during the meeting. Luckily, we agreed on the best solution.
The chosen exhibition design

Paper prototypes to test out ideas

Hacking a key board to test as prototype material

Prototyping with Arudino and Raspberry Pi

User testing at the museum
Just a few days before we were to set up our first test at the museum, however, Denmark closed down due to covid-19. This would have been the first out of 4 prototypes—one would build on top of the other to expand the prototype like building blocks. Preparations had been made for the first prototype and observation and conversation schematics had been made.

But, we had to iterate, which resulted in a completely different project.
